Nasserie Carew joined USAGM as Director of Global Communications & Office of Public Affairs in January 2017 with responsibilities for developing and directing all USAGM communications and external relations strategies and activities. In August 2019, she was named the Agency’s Chief Global Communications Officer (CGCO) working with USAGM’s five networks to coordinate external communications on issues affecting both the networks and the broader global media organization.
Carew joins USAGM from the U.S. Department of State, where she served as Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs and led communications in the State Department’s Ebola Coordination Unit (ECU). Prior to that job, Carew served from 2010–2014 as the Managing Director of Public Affairs at the Millennium Challenge Corporation, where she managed a broad range of communications functions, working with leadership in the White House and across government agencies.
A veteran of issues management, Carew has led strategic communications for international and national media, major stakeholders, and policymakers over the past 20 years. She also managed communications and advertising for the multimillion-dollar national re-brand and positioning for YWCA USA. Carew is a member of the Global Health Council’s board of directors and has served on numerous advisory committees including the advisory body of the World Congress on Communication for Development. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa and a Master’s degree from Howard University.
