Steve Capus

Senior Advisor to the CEO

Steve Capus is a Senior Advisor to the USAGM CEO. In his capacity as a management expert, Capus provides expert advice and guidance on all matters involving the Agency’s mission and operations, as well as developing and implementing the Agency’s strategic plan and priorities.

With more than 30 years of experience, Capus is renowned for his proficiency in journalism, production, senior management, multi-platform newsroom transformation, strategy development, communications and executive education.

Capus’ 20-year career with NBC, included a nearly 8-year tenure as President of NBC News. He directed overall editorial and management oversight of the global news organization and served on NBC corporate management committees under the ownership of General Electric and Comcast. He also oversaw MSNBC cable/digital and served on the MSNBC joint venture board with Microsoft. Capus was the executive producer of, “NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw” and MSNBC’s “The News with Brian Williams.” Under his leadership, NBC News was honored six years in a row with the esteemed Edward R. Murrow award for Overall Excellence in the network news category.

From 2014 to 2018, Capus was the executive editor of CBS News and the executive producer of the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.” Capus also managed and executive produced CBS News’ Campaign 2016 Presidential debates in Iowa and South Carolina; RNC & DNC convention broadcasts and live election night coverage.

Capus and his production teams have been the recipients of many distinguished honors, such as the Edward R. Murrow Award, Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award, several Emmy Awards, a George Polk Award, a Peabody Award and the National Association of Black Journalists’ Ida B. Wells Award.

Prior to joining CBS News, Capus was an Executive in Residence at IESE Business School, where he was involved in numerous business management and communications industry programs.

Earlier in his career, Capus worked at Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV, KYW-TV and Philadelphia-area newspapers and radio stations.

In 1983, Capus won a municipal election for Township Auditor in his hometown of Warminster, Pennsylvania. He also worked for the Bucks County Board of Commissioners.

Capus graduated from Temple University in 1986 and serves on the Board of Visitors of Temple’s Klein School of Communications. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
