Radio Marti Expands its News Magazine “Las Noticias Como Son”
Radio Martí’s news magazine “Las Noticias Como Son” moved to an extended format with a fast-paced round up of news and analysis from around the world. In its 13th year, “Las Noticias Como Son” expanded to an hour with news of breaking events in Cuba and elsewhere.
“It is an interactive and engaging program where the focus is to broadcast different points of view to promote healthy debate about issues relevant to our audience,” said Carlos García-Peréz, director of Radio and TV Martí. “As a result, it has developed a loyal base of listeners, including inside Cuba’s prisons.”
“I listen to Las Noticias Como Son on Radio Martí on a tiny battery powered radio that is hidden in my cell, I use the prison bars as an antenna”, said Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta, a prisoner of Guantanamo.
The program discusses some of the day’s most important events related to Cuba, gives a fusion of headlines news from the U.S. and around the world, and incorporates regular contributions from independent journalists.
“It is inspiring to know that Cuban prisoners, in a clandestine manner, listen to Radio Martí and that it is, for many, their only contact with the outside world,” said Amado Gil, program co-host.
“Las Noticias Como Son” airs daily from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Radio Martí’s AM and shortwave frequencies, and is available online at www.Martinoticias.com.
The Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which is funded by the U.S. government through the presidentially appointed Broadcasting Board of Governors, was established in 1990 to oversee the operations of Radio and TV Martí, which broadcast news and information to the people of Cuba.
