VOA’s Development office and the Hausa Service organized a Town Hall and Health Workshhop for journalists in Abuja, Nigeria on Monday, June 27, 2011 as part of the BBG trip to Africa.
The Town Hall, organized in conjunction with Radio France International, focused on the role of international media in promoting health and development in Nigeria. At the Town Hall, BBG Governor Dana Perino announced the establishment of VOA’s Africa Health Network. “We want to help prepare their journalists for professional and informative reporting on health issues in Africa,” Perino said.
Standing in for First Lady Patience Jonathan, Mrs. Nwannecka Ike Ekweremadu, wife of the deputy Senate President, spoke of the “special bond” between VOA and Nigeria.
At a training workshop, Sunday Dare, a Knight Fellow in Nigeria, encouraged journalists to use social media tools, including Facebook to communicate information with each other and with outside audiences.
