Springfield, Va. — On Saturday, September 15, Alhurra launches Street Pulse, the network’s latest production from Egypt. The program takes a unique look at the most important social and cultural issues; examining a single topic each week such as the impact of the internet on political and social change, the role and origin of revolutionary songs, human trafficking and sexual harassment.
Street Pulse highlights an element of the topic that has not been reported in the mainstream press, takes a historical look at it, and then updates viewers on its current impact on society. The program goes from the streets of Cairo to the most rural villages. It takes experts and interviewees out of their formal offices and speaks with them in a more relaxed atmosphere.
Brian Conniff, President of MBN said, “Street Pulse comes at a critical time where Egyptians are thirsty to learn the true stories about the changes happening in their country.” Conniff added, “This new program is a continuation of Alhurra’s commitment to covering Egypt with shows such as Hiwar Cairo, Rayheen Ala Feen? and Al Youm.”
Street Pulse builds on the success of the critically acclaimed series of the same name that aired within Al Youm. Alhurra expanded the idea of Street Pulse to make it an hour-long program, which airs every Saturday at 11:00 p.m. Cairo time. Viewers can follow Street Pulse on Facebook.
Recent surveys by international research companies such as ACNielsen show that Alhurra has consistently averaged approximately 26 million weekly viewers for the last three years. Alhurra is broadcast on the Nilesat and Arabsat satellites in the Middle East. It is operated by the non-profit corporation “The Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc.” (MBN). MBN is financed by the U.S. Government through a grant from the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency. The BBG serves oversight and as a firewall to protect the professional independence and integrity of the broadcasters.
