André Mendes nominated for federal leadership award
André Mendes, the Director of the Office of Technology, Services and Innovation at the Broadcasting Board of Governors, has been nominated for a Federal Leadership Award in the FedScoop 50 Awards.
The FedScoop 50 Awards honor Federal IT leaders who work to support their agency’s mission and the IT community. The awards are meant to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the winners, and to acknowledge their efforts to make a positive impact in the government IT community and in public service. Award winners will be recognized for their achievements and contributions to the government IT community on November 28.
Among the many achievements of the Office of Technology, Services and Innovation in the last year, Mendes has spearheaded an effort to migrate the BBG to Microsoft Office 365, a cloud-based tool which has resulted in higher uptime, reduced risk, and lower infrastructure costs. Simultaneously, Mendes led a massive platform server consolidation and virtualization effort that enabled the retirement of over one hundred servers, dozens of database instances and several legacy storage systems. In addition, under his leadership, the BBG made the tech-savvy and cost-saving decision to standardize content management systems across the agency by transitioning to Pangea. This decision has made content sharing across the BBG much easier, and has also amounted to a calculated yearly savings of about $1M with a Year One savings in excess of $300,000.
