Alhurra Celebrates Women on International Women’s Day


To mark International Women’s Day on March 8, Alhurra’s newscasts and current affairs programing included reports from Yemen, Israel and Gaza, examining the rights and roles of women following the Arab Spring.
Eye on Democracy hosted an interview with Amat Ali Razaq Ali Hamad, the Yemeni Minister of Social Affairs and Labor. The program also interviewed Nabilah Al-Zubair, founder of the feminist Foundation for Culture and Dialogue of Civilizations; and Faiza Mohamed of Somalia, the Director of the Nairobi office of Equality Now. Alhurra’s Al Youm profiled women from Somalia, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Yemen and Libya who have excelled in their professions and served as models for women everywhere.
Women and innovation were at the center of Alhurra’s Focus. The program highlighted a Pakistani woman who created a system of micro finance loans to support business opportunities for woman in Pakistan and a female obstetrician from California who developed a solar energy producing mechanism to reduce maternal mortality rates in Africa.
Alhurra’s Hunna (in English, Women’s Views) looked at the strength of women as they overcame difficult challenges. The piece featured Maram, who despite being born without any hands, is determined to have a normal life. Hunna also interviewed a woman who lost her son during the Egyptian revolution and examined how she has gone on with her life honoring his memory.
