Alhurra Interviews Cong. Smith on Syria and Egypt
Alhurra Television interviewed Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, regarding the plans to arm opposition fighters in Syria and the current situation in Egypt.
During the interview Cong. Smith said, “I am very concerned about not knowing who it is we are arming. The vetting process is, I think, weak. And the fact that Al Qaeda and other very Islamist-oriented elements are co-mingled with the Free Syrian Army is very disconcerting.” He added that Syrian Christians are caught in the middle of the conflict in Syria. “The Christians are being targeted by both sides for extermination,” Cong. Smith concluded.
When talking about the current situation in Egypt after president Mohamed Morsi’s ouster, Cong. Smith said, “My hope is that we will get a state that will respect human rights, that there will be fair and free elections sooner rather than later.”
