Business & Entrepreneurial Journalism for Students

May/June 2015

BBG’s Office of Development and International Media Training held a training workshop in Kano, Nigeria for the students at Bayero University.  Reporters from the VOA Africa Division in partnership the Bayero University’s Department of Mass Communications implemented the workshop.  Henok Fente (Horn of Africa service) and Halima Kane (VOA Hausa service) led the training sessions in addition to guest speakers:  eight professors from BUK Mass Communication Department, the Dean of the School of Business, the Managing Director of Freedom Radio Umar S. Tudunwada, and Salisu Hassan, founder and CEO of a Nigerian start-up.  Students were introduced to new media technologies as well as new business models for media products.  The workshop proved to be successful as a handful of students went on to form their own media production company.
