Alhurra Highlights the Achievements of Women
As the world marks International Women’s Day, Alhurra Television and Alhurra.com are celebrating women and their accomplishments. Coverage started on March 7th and will continue throughout March 8th, culminating with a full day of prominent female experts sharing their insights and analysis on the news stories. To mark International Women’s Day, Alhurra will only host female guests during its newscasts and live current affairs programs.
The network is broadcasting reports from across the Middle East and North Africa, as well as from around the world showcasing achievements of women. Alhurra is profiling some of the most prominent female athletes from the Arab world; the role of women to impact humanitarian changes in Iraq; how Jordanian women are developing their own small businesses in rural Jordan to give them economic independence; as well as a ceremony in Cairo recognizing prominent Egyptian women.
Alhurra also showed the triumphs of women around the world when it was the was the only pan-Arab network to carry the State Department’s International Women of Courage ceremony live. The network interviewed the two Arab honorees, Col. Khalida Khalaf Hanna al-Twal from Jordan and Mama Maggie from Egypt to highlight their valuable contribution to society.
In addition to highlighting the many successes of women around the world, Alhurra also examines the challenges they still face. Alhurra reported on the laws that discriminate against women in the Arab world; examined how women are portrayed in the media and how that impacts how people perceive them; the uphill battle women face in male-dominated societies; and the struggles of women in the workplace.
