Scott Carpenter, Tom Malinowski join RFE/RL’s Board of Directors
Washington, D.C. — Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) welcomes Jigsaw executive Scott Carpenter and former member of Congress Tom Malinowski as new members of the company’s Board of Directors.
“Scott and Tom bring decades of democracy and human rights promotion to the RFE/RL board of directors at a time when press freedom is increasingly under attack,” said Karen Kornbluh, Chair of the RFE/RL Board of Directors. “Their unique perspectives are invaluable as RFE/RL responds to Russian and Chinese censorship and malign influence by bringing trusted news to growing audiences. As the Kremlin’s full-scale war in Ukraine rages on, this mandate has renewed urgency.”
Scott Carpenter is the Managing Director of Jigsaw, a Google company, where he oversees business operations and drives its international engagement around countering disinformation, online harassment, radicalization, and repressive censorship. Before joining Jigsaw, Carpenter was among the founding team members of Google Ideas in 2011. He previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Near East Affairs, director of governance for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, and Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Human Rights and Democracy. Carpenter is an adjunct fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy; a member of the Council on Foreign Relations; and also serves on the boards of the National Endowment of Democracy, the America for Bulgaria Foundation, and the Project on Middle East Democracy.
Tom Malinowski served two terms in the House of Representatives, after winning the election in 2018 in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. He was Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, focusing on national security and Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine. Prior to his election to Congress, Malinowski served as a speechwriter for Secretaries of State Warren Christopher and Madeleine Albright, and as a Senior Director on President Clinton’s National Security Council. Malinowski was the chief Washington advocate for Human Rights Watch, and later served as President Obama’s Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor.
Carpenter and Malinowski join existing members of RFE/RL’s Board, including Chair Karen Kornbluh, Senior Fellow and Director of the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security Lisa Curtis, former Washington Post Deputy Editorial Page Editor Jackson Diehl, RFE/RL President and CEO Jamie Fly, American Purpose editor in chief and former RFE/RL President Jeffrey Gedmin, PBS host Margaret Hoover, public relations executive Michael Kempner, and President and CEO of IREX Kristin Lord.
