USAGM marks World Press Freedom Day by highlighting global censorship threats
Washington, D.C. — In support of World Press Freedom Day, the U.S. Agency for Global Media has launched an online series, “This is What Censorship Looks Like.”
The series, which will be published on USAGM’s digital platforms, profiles the forms and frequency of censorship around the world.
USAGM and its entities — Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, Radio Free Asia, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks with the support of the Open Technology Fund — operate in some of the most media-restrictive environments in the world. USAGM entities have faced frequent censorship, while USAGM journalists and contributors risk harassment, imprisonment, or worse.
By highlighting the experiences of USAGM’s entities and journalists, as well as publicizing the stories of other threats to press freedom, the “This is What Censorship Looks Like” series offers first-hand stories of censorship.
