Sixteen journalists of the RFE/RL Uzbek Services were honored for their continuing coverage during the so-called events in Andijan during which and after which the Uzbek authorities parceled out information from the region and put journalists under pressure. Official relations between Uzbekistan and the United States soured over Andijan, and the Uzbek authorities closed the RFE/RL bureau in Tashkent the following January.
