RFA Cambodian journalist flees the country over fear of safety
RFA journalist Vuthy Huot, who covered the highly-contested election season in Cambodia, was forced to flee the country over fear of his safety.
Long targeted by Cambodian authorities, Huot, also known as Chun Chanboth, was accused of concealing his identity to enter the Prey Sar prison in Phnom Penh to interview a political prisoner on April 19. After Huot fled the country, a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Observers cited the case as further evidence of Cambodia’s eroding respect for free speech. The Committee to Protect Journalists issued a statement calling for “this bogus lawsuit” to be dropped.
Huot, a U.S. citizen, returned to RFA’s Washington office where he continues to work with the Khmer Service to bring the Cambodian public honest, unbiased, and comprehensive coverage of the elections.
