RFA Tibetan reporters harassed By Chinese nationalists in Washington, DC
While covering Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the nuclear security summit in Washington in April, reporters from RFA’s Tibetan Service were harassed by Chinese nationalist demonstrators gathering at the Convention Center. The reporter struggled to file her report but was met by a mob of demonstrators using Chinese flags to obstruct her broadcast. Demonstrators even resorting to physical contact as they pushed and shoved her and her colleagues until police intervened. This incident serves as an illustration of the kind of intimidation Radio Free Asia reporters have to face, even in Washington, DC. The incident was captured on video and shared via YouTube and Twitter. Reporters from the New York Times and representatives from Human Rights Watch shared the video via social media.
